Austria to implement further smoking legislation

Austria is set to pass smokefree legislation in restaurants by the end of this year. A voluntary regulation, asking restaurant owners to reserve 40 per cent of their seats for non-smokers, failed, Health Minister Andrea Kdolsky said on Friday.
"A law will be the next step. It is expected to pass parliament in autumn and enter into force by 1 January 2008," the conservative minister said.
Health ministry inspectors who controlled adherence to the voluntary 40-per-cent rule all over the country came to the conclusion that only 58 per cent of the businesses had implemented the measures.
