Wetherspoon 'led the way' with smokefree pubs

2 May 2007

A total of 152 Wetherspoon pubs and bars are now completely smokefree, ahead of the smokefree legislation which comes into force on 1 July. An additional 460 of the company's outlets have a non-smoking area which accounts for 80 per cent of the drinking and eating area.

Wetherspoon's commercial director Paul Harbottle said: "We have supported the ban on smoking in pubs since it was first announced. We were the first company to have completely non-smoking pubs, with the first opening in Exeter, way back in January 2005.

"Our commitment to the ban is highlighted by the number of our pubs and bars to date which are either completely non-smoking or at least 80 per cent non-smoking."
